Selenium is an essential microelement required for various biological functions. Adequate dietary selenium intake is crucial for the immune system, as it relies on selenoproteins to regulate immune cell functions.
Humans can absorb selenium through food. Foods rich in selenium include leafy greens, Brussels sprouts, nuts, oily fish, whole grain flour, and seeds and sprouts. Supplementation with low doses of selenium can improve immunobiological functions, particularly resistance to microbial and viral infections, especially in individuals with selenium deficiency.
