Does it really make sense to take collagen?

Collagen is an endogenous structural protein that is essential for the firmness and elasticity of skin, joints, connective tissue and bones. With increasing age, however, the body’s own production decreases – a process that cannot be completely stopped, but can certainly be supported.

This is where supplementing with collagen comes in. Numerous studies show that hydrolyzed collagen, i.e. collagen broken down into peptides, can be absorbed by the body and used to form new collagen structures. The amino acids contained serve as building blocks, while additional nutrients – above all vitamin C – actively stimulate the body’s own rebuilding process. Positive effects on skin elasticity, skin moisture content, joint comfort and the stability of connective tissue can be observed, particularly when taken over a longer period of several weeks.

What is important in order to achieve an effect?

Quality

First of all, it depends on the quality of the collagen used. Hydrolyzed collagen is particularly easy to use. This means that the protein has been broken down into smaller building blocks (peptides), which the body can absorb and process more easily.

Quantity

The right amount also plays an important role. New collagen can only be formed if enough of these building blocks arrive in the body. Studies show that between 2.5 and 10 grams of collagen powder a day are useful for this – depending on whether the aim is to support the skin, joints or connective tissue.

Duration of application

Another factor is the duration of application. Collagen does not work immediately, but develops its effects gradually. Regular use for at least eight to twelve weeks is recommended in order to achieve visible or noticeable results.

Composition of the product

Last but not least, the composition of the product also plays a role: vitamin C should be included or taken as a supplement, as it activates the body’s own collagen formation. Trace elements such as zinc or copper can also have a supportive effect. Products that already contain this combination are therefore particularly suitable for practical use.

Do creams with collagen have any effect?

Unlike ingestible collagen, creams containing collagen cannot penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin. The collagen molecules in such products are usually too large to pass through the skin barrier. Therefore, they cannot directly influence the body’s own collagen in the skin. However, this does not mean that these creams are ineffective. They can nourish the skin superficially, provide more moisture or have a soothing effect. But they are no substitute for supplying collagen from the inside. If you want to do something specifically for the body’s own collagen network – for example for firm skin, healthy joints or strong connective tissue – you should rely on a high-quality collagen supplement. Because only by taking these supplements can the important building blocks get to exactly where they are actually needed in the body.
