Lactase overdose

Lactase tablets—how many can I take?

Those who wish to consume foods containing milk sugar despite lactose intolerance can resort to lactase tablets. But can you take large quantities of these, or is there a risk of overdose? To get to the bottom of this question, you need to understand how lactase tablets work.

How do lactase tablets work?

In lactose intolerance, the body does not produce enough lactase to completely break down milk sugar (lactose). This can lead to symptoms such as flatulence, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or nausea. Taking lactase tablets provides the body with the missing enzyme, which can significantly reduce or even completely prevent symptoms.

Is it possible to overdose on lactase?

No, it is not possible to overdose on lactase. This is due to the way it works. Lactase is an enzyme that specifically breaks down milk sugar (lactose). It acts exclusively on lactose and not on the body itself. After digestion, the enzyme is completely excreted without having any further effect. If not all lactase enzymes are used up, the excess lactase is also excreted.
