Taking lactase tablets: How many tablets do I need?
The number of lactase tablets you should take depends on various factors. The lactose content of the food consumed, the dosage of the tablets and the severity of the lactose intolerance all play a role. To determine the lactose content of individual foods/drinks, you can use a lactose calculator, for example.
Depending on the lactose content, you should choose the dosage of your lactase tablets. As a rule of thumb, 1,000 FCC units can break down approximately 5 g of lactose. If you are unsure, choose a higher dosage. Lactase only reacts with the lactose in your food and not with the body itself. Therefore, the lactase that is “too much” has no negative effects on your body.
