How much lactose is in cheese?
Cheese is a dairy product, but contains varying amounts of lactose depending on the type and how long it is ripened. While fresh cheese and young cheeses tend to have a higher lactose content, the lactose content decreases as it ripens. Hard and semi-hard cheeses, such as Parmesan or Gouda, are often almost lactose-free because the lactose is largely broken down during ripening. Special manufacturing processes also influence the lactose content.
| Type | Lactose content in in g / 100 g |
|---|---|
| Cream cheese (e.g. double cream cheese and mozzarella) | approx. 2,6-3,5 g |
| Feta | approx. 0,5 g |
| Soft, semi-hard and hard cheese (e.g. Brie, Gouda or Parmesan) | low or lactosefree (< 0,1g) |
