Lactase tablet dosage
Lactase tablet dosage
Lactase tablets are available in different dosages. The dosage is given in FCC units, which describes the enzyme activity. They indicate how much lactose can be broken down per minute under standardized conditions. FCC stands for Food Chemical Codex. This Codex is an American book that contains binding tests for food ingredients that producers and buyers can rely on. This book lists, among other things, tests that determine how many units of lactase are necessary for a certain number of grams of lactose to completely break down milk sugar. How quickly an effect is achieved in the body depends on various factors. Among other things, the dosage form plays a role. A chewable tablet, for example, has a quick effect.
Which dosage should I choose?
Basically, the ideal dosage varies from person to person. 1,000 FCC units per 5 g of lactose are recommended. How many units of lactase are needed depends on how much lactose is contained in the food. For example, 100 g of low-fat quark contains approx. 4 g of lactose and 100 g of Parmesan only contains 0.05 g of lactose.
