Vitamin E
What is the effect of vitamin E?
Vitamin E is one of the most powerful antioxidants. This means that it protects our cells from free radicals. These are aggressive molecules that act like tiny “rust” in the body and can attack cell structures. Vitamin E stabilizes the outer layer of our cells, the cell membrane, in particular. It therefore helps cells to stay healthy for longer. Vitamin E also has a positive effect on the heart and blood vessels because it keeps the blood vessels elastic, supports blood circulation, and can reduce inflammatory processes.
How much vitamin E do you need?
The daily requirement for adults is around 8 milligrams. This amount can easily be obtained through diet. For example, just one tablespoon of wheat germ oil contains enough vitamin E to cover almost the entire daily requirement. A handful of almonds or hazelnuts also makes a valuable contribution.
Which foods are rich in vitamin E?
Vitamin E is found primarily in vegetable oils such as wheat germ oil, sunflower oil, rapeseed oil, and olive oil. Nuts, seeds, and almonds are also rich in vitamin E. Green vegetables such as spinach and broccoli also contain vitamin E, albeit in smaller quantities. People who regularly include vegetable oils and nuts in their diet are generally well supplied with vitamin E.
How can I recognize a vitamin E deficiency?
A deficiency is relatively rare in Germany, but can occur in people with certain digestive disorders or fat absorption problems, as vitamin E is fat-soluble. Symptoms of a deficiency can include muscle weakness, fatigue, concentration problems, increased susceptibility to infections, or even nerve function disorders.
Is it possible to overdose on vitamin E?
Yes, this is possible, but only if you take high-dose dietary supplements over a long period of time. A permanent excess intake can increase the risk of bleeding and put strain on the body. However, an overdose is practically impossible with a normal diet.
