Electrolytes
Keeping electrolytes and fluids in balance
Whether due to heavy sweating, excessive alcohol consumption, diarrhea and vomiting or other illnesses, electrolyte loss can cause health problems. You can keep your electrolyte and fluid levels in balance by eating a balanced diet and drinking enough fluids each day. However, it can often be useful to supply the body with additional electrolytes to prevent or correct a deficiency.
Everything about electrolytes
What are electrolytes?
Electrolytes are minerals with electrical charges dissolved in our cell and body fluids (e.g. blood, urine and sweat). The most important electrolytes include sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride and phosphate.
Together with vitamins, hormones and trace elements, electrolytes are important for the metabolism. Our body consists of approx. 50 % water. As a solvent and means of transportation, it is the “motor oil” for our body. A balanced electrolyte and fluid balance is therefore crucial for our well-being and health.
When are electrolytes recommended?
for stomach and
intestinal complaints
after
alcohol consumption
with
indisposition
when traveling and
increased sweating
after sporting
activity
How does an electrolyte deficiency manifest itself?
Muscle cramps and weakness
Too little potassium or magnesium can lead to muscle cramps, headaches, dizziness, tiredness and weakness.
Cardiac arrhythmia
They can be caused by an imbalance of potassium, calcium or magnesium.
Neurological symptoms
A severe lack of sodium or calcium can be the cause of confusion or seizures, for example.
Fluid loss
A sodium deficiency can cause the body to dry out and dehydrate. Older people and babies are particularly at risk.
Frequently asked questions
Which electrolytes are suitable for children?
Our JUNIOR electrolytes are specially designed for children aged 4 and over. Each day, 2 effervescent tablets may be dissolved in a glass of water (200 ml).
Are the products vegan?
Yes, our electrolytes are vegan, lactose-free and gluten-free.
Which electrolytes do I use for stomach and intestinal complaints?
Stomach and intestinal complaints often result in a high loss of fluids. It is important to compensate for the loss of fluids and electrolytes. In the case of high fluid loss, sodium and potassium in particular, but also all other electrolytes, should be supplied. Here we would recommend our sanotact® Electrolytes Plus.
Do electrolytes help with diarrhea?
Diarrhea can be responsible for the excretion of important minerals. This can result in an electrolyte deficiency. Electrolyte products, a glucose-mineral mixture, can help to compensate for the loss of electrolytes.
