Athletes know that we lose electrolytes when we sweat and this is something we should all be aware of. This is why athletes drink water containing minerals before, during and after sport. Electrolytes are substances that carry an electric charge when dissolved in water. Some important electrolytes include potassium, magnesium, sodium, calcium, phosphorus and chloride. We refer to the even distribution of electrolytes throughout the body as our electrolyte balance. Getting enough electrolytes and liquids is essential for our bodies.
It is not just sport that can cause the body to lose minerals, and therefore important electrolytes, due to dehydration. Other environmental conditions or high temperatures, drinking alcohol at festivals, parties, stag dos or other events, as well as diarrhoea and vomiting can lead to our bodies losing important minerals. An electrolyte deficiency disrupts our water balance and can cause a variety of symptoms, such as muscle weakness, cramps or tiredness. Recommended intake
- Children aged 4 and above, young people and adults should take 2 sachets a day. Dissolve one sachet in a glass of water (200 ml).
- Do not exceed the recommended daily intake stated. Dietary supplements are not a substitute for a balanced and varied diet and a healthy lifestyle.
- Keep out of reach of small children.
