Electrolytes for Stomach intestine
Balance your electrolytes
We’ve all been there: you fly off on vacation full of anticipation and catch a nasty stomach bug on the spot. Unpleasant symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea are the result. What effect does diarrhea have on your electrolyte balance? And how can you use this knowledge to get through your next gastrointestinal infection better?
Effects of diarrhea and vomiting on our electrolyte balance
Diarrhea leads to the loss of numerous electrolytes, including sodium, potassium and chloride, as well as water. This leads to a reduction in blood volume and blood pressure, which can cause symptoms such as weakness and dizziness.
What do I do if I have diarrhea?
Acute diarrhea in healthy adults
Acute diarrhea rarely needs to be treated with medication in healthy adults. However, if you feel unsure, it is best to contact your family doctor. Be patient and mindful so that your body can regenerate in peace.
Bloody diarrhea and/or fever
However, if you have a fever and/or bloody diarrhea, you must see your doctor! Only your doctor can diagnose the causes of prolonged diarrhea.
Risk groups
Diarrhea in children or older people should not be taken lightly. The cause must be found and treated quickly! In addition to treatment, dehydration and electrolyte imbalances should be avoided at all costs in these risk groups. It is best to always have suitable products or household remedies to hand.
Home remedies for diarrhea
What to eat with diarrhea?
In the case of acute diarrhea, you should give preference to the following foods due to their intestine-friendly properties: salty snacks, sweetened tea, rice, bananas, rusks.
To avoid further irritating the bowel, you should avoid the following foods for the time being: Coffee, alcohol, fatty foods.
Rehydration
If you don’t have any emergency rehydration products to hand, we have a simple solution for you: You can quickly prepare the rehydration solution from the World Health Organization (WHO) in the kitchen. You will need:
- 1 -2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon table salt
- 1 liter pure orange juice
- 1 liter of boiled water
Place all the ingredients in a bowl and mix well.
Home remedies for vomiting
Chamomile tea
Chamomile has a soothing, anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic effect on the stomach and intestines. A lukewarm chamomile tea is ideal for soothing an irritated stomach.
Ginger
Ingwer ist bekannt für seine antiemetische (gegen Übelkeit und Erbrechen gerichtete) Wirkung. Frischer Ingwertee oder kleine Stücke kandierter Ingwer können helfen, den Brechreiz zu lindern.
Rucks and toast
After the vomiting has subsided, it is important to slowly get the stomach used to food again. Dry, easily digestible foods such as rusks, pretzel sticks or dry toast are particularly suitable.
Electrolytes
Frequent vomiting causes the body to lose fluids and important electrolytes. A homemade mixture of boiled water, a little sugar and salt or special electrolyte supplements help to compensate for this loss.
Peppermint tea
Peppermint can relax the muscles of the gastrointestinal tract and help against nausea. However, peppermint should be avoided if you suffer from reflux (heartburn).
Warmth and rest
A hot water bottle on the stomach can have a relaxing effect and relieve abdominal cramps. At the same time, physical rest is important so that the body can recover.
